Computer Associates (CA) says it will focus on six core technology
products, including security and storage, in an attempt to make it
easier, both internally and for enterprise customers, to understand
the company's offerings. Analysts say it's CA's attempt to
rationalize its vast array of acquired products.

[1] "Users get preview of BMC's Patrol 7.0"
IT professionals got a sneak preview of BMC's new, easier to use
version of its Patrol enterprise management software at BMC's annual
user conference.  The software maker also announced an alliance with
Oracle that formalizes BMC's embedding of Oracle's database as a
repository in Patrol.

Computer Associates (CA) revealed details of its Unicenter 3.0
release and J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) technology developments
but kept the scars of its recent accounting scuffle under wraps. The
software maker said that it expects to release Version 3.0 of its
flagship Unicenter business management software sometime during the
third quarter of this year.

Sun and IBM are both pushing 64-bit versions of Java technology at
the JavaOne event in San Francisco this week and both companies plan
to support Java on Intel's new Itanium 64-bit chips in the future.
More important for programmers, however, is that the companies'
announcements indicate that Java is now an option for programmers
working on data-intensive software applications, including scientific
computational and large analytical databases.

[5] "Salomon Smith Barney sizes up server market"
Of $1.5 billion in Linux-related hardware revenue last year, all but
$300 million came from PC servers, according to analyst firm Salomon
Smith Barney. So, despite IBM's push in the midrange market, NT will
continue to dominate the platform for the open-source operating

That's the definitive word from the Vatican. In a document about to
be released, the Church praises the Internet as a "wonderful

confessions are out of the question.
