This week's question was answered by Jan Lahmann, search390's Linux
on S/390 Expert.
Q: We have VSE/ESA 2.3.1 running on S/390 2003-202 standalone. We
would like to try Linux and Oracle database(s) in LPAR mode. What are
the pre-requisites for this?
A: Let me first comment on Oracle: Currently the Oracle database is
not available for Linux/390. But I know about a lot of people with
this requirement. I would suggest that you talk to Oracle about this.
Technically, it should not be too much work to port the database to
Linux/390. Oracle "just" has to make the business decision to do so.
About running Linux in an LPAR of a Multiprise 2000: It is possible
to run Linux on an MP2000, but for certain reasons this is not
supported by IBM (there are serious performance implications because
of the missing IEEE floating point support). Nevertheless, many
people run Linux on this kind of hardware and the installation is
exactly the same as on any other S/390 system. Have a look at the
IBM, SuSE or Turbolinux websites (links were given in previous
answers in this search390.com category) for the installation manuals.
Basically, what you need is an LPAR with 128MB (better more) storage,
a tape unit to IPL from, a couple of 3390 DASD (at least 1; 2 would
be better), and a Linux for S/390 distribution (available from SuSE,
Turbolinux and soon also RedHat).

you Thursday!
Can't wait till Thurs? No problem! Go to the forums now and ask a
question, or respond to an existing post. Check out the following
post from search390 user Deuce: "Being an MVS Systems Programmer, I
am not in tune to the pro's and con's of the different file systems
available in the other OS's. With S/390 hardware and attached
intelligent Storage Subsystem, is this as much of a concern to have
in place on S/390 versus NT or R/6000 platforms?"
What do you think? Let Deuce know. Post your response here
