The ABCs of XML
Mainframers with at least a passing interest in Web development
should consider XML. It's not as hard to learn as Java, but it is an
increasingly important skill to have in your quiver. Check out our
resources about XML.

Speaking of XML, search390 user "ClinchcoMan" posted this in our
Operating Systems Forum and would love it if you could help: "Any
chance that XML Extenders can be retrofitted to DSN510 FMID...for
those of us who do not plan on going to OS/390 2.7, DB2 V7 right
away? Like via PTF?" Have an answer for ClinchcoMan? Then post it
now and be a 390 OS forum hero!

While you're there, see if you can help "falseid" with his/her
security problem: "I'm encountering a problem with security. A
programmer has catalogued a job containing a SAS program with a (not
declared) dynamic allocation of the Internal Reader. This job was
executed using an automatic scheduler whose ID was SYSOPR equivalent.
Referring to an external file (or database table), the programmer
could then submit an arbitrary JCL accessing all files in the system.
The bottom line is that we have an ID masking almost impossible to
prevent (as far as I know) unless checking all the code of our SAS
programs! Maybe there's something I don't know?" Maybe you know!
Share your ideas with "falseid" now.

[1] "IBM cuts jobs as part of routine evaluations"
On the heels of laying off nearly 1,500 workers in its global
services unit, IBM is letting go other employees in its personal
computer business and its sales and distribution operation. The job
cuts are part of routine evaluation of workers' skills, said an IBM
spokesperson.

[2] "CA World: Exhibitors criticize attendance, logistics"
Some exhibitors at Computer Associates International's CA World user
conference said they may skip next year's event because of the low
attendance and technical problems at this year's CA World. CA World
drew more than 20,000 attendees last year while this year's drew
10,000 according to CA. Though some exhibitors think the figure is
closer to 6,000.

[4] "The falling high-tech tide hasn't dragged down IBM, yet"
IBM has managed to keep its head above the technology waters around
it, but rumors of a profit warning and the current recession in the
technology sector have many wondering if Big Blue is immune to the
downturn in technology stocks.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Tech words redefine Oxford dictionary"
Word to your lexicon! More words whelped from the womb of technology
have penetrated the pages of the "Concise Oxford Dictionary." The
latest version not only includes "MP3," "e-book," and "digital
divide," it even defines those text abbreviations you're forced to
use to save space on a tiny screen. "RUOK," "OIC," "KWIM" (know what
I mean?) and "BCNU" are all collected and defined in an appendix,
along with a stash of emoticons. :)
