LEAD STORY:
"IBM brings Fibre Channel connectivity to its Shark server"

IBM announced Tuesday a technology for its Shark servers that
combines Fibre Channel and ESCON (Enterprise System Connection)
tools. According to IBM, the technology, dubbed FICON, means users
can increase storage data throughput by about six-times the current
rate and allows Shark servers to connect directly to storage area
networks (SANs).

a Java Servlet. In the literature, I found that we can not use CESN
to sign-on. How is it possible to execute a transaction without
log-on to the system? How to ensure that a transaction is available
for only a set of user-ids on the mainframe through web interface?
Can someone give sample code etc?" If you have the answer, or some

[1] "Disk I/O sightings create real savings"
Having the ability to see the actual I/O of files on the network
helps IT managers improve system performance and increase
scalability, and in return, ease storage slowdowns and create a
higher ROI.

[2] "Researchers strive for computer-on-a-chip with MEMS memory"
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University say they believe a
microelectromechanical memory now in development could eventually put
an entire computer system -- CPU, RAM, I/O and hard drive -- on a
single chip. Ultimately, the MEMS-based storage would offer faster
access times at lower costs than existing disk-drive technology
provides.

[3] "Code Red Worm set to strike again on Tuesday"
IT departments are bracing for the possible return of the Code Red
worm tonight. Hundreds of thousands of people have downloaded the
preventative patch Microsoft has issued for its server software.
While Code Red launches a denial-of-service attack, its real threat
to most users is its ability to slow down the Internet. In seeking
out other computers' servers to degrade, the worm can bog down the
Net with extraneous data requests, slowing sites to a near-halt.

[4] "Free mainframe"
The short-term benefits for IBM are limited, but IBM is into Linux on
the mainframe for the long haul and the return on investment has huge
potential.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Taming the wild, wild Web"

There have been lots of theories about the cause of the Internet
economy's recent nosedive, though none more creative than the one
that blames "hippie anarchists." Some in the U.S. business world
believe that if profit-minded types had been at the helm when the
Internet was created 30 years ago, the medium would deliver business
data with the high priority it deserves; everyone else would just
have to wait. Who says the ugly American is dead?
