So far this year, cuts in the telecommunications, computer and electronics industries totaled 358,375, compared to 26,758 in 2000. Last month, there were 26,321 job cuts in the US computer industry, compared with the previous month's 8,950 cuts, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. High-end servers draw on the power of dozens of computer processors by linking them through a technique called symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP). SMP uses various high-speed communication technologies to connect the CPUs, which can then collectively handle heavy-duty tasks. Currently, Dell's most powerful machine is a relatively small eight-processor system. That will change in 2002, Dell says, when the company introduces a new server architecture called the "brick." Each brick is a four-processor computing module that's connected to several others by way of upcoming high-speed communication technology. When it comes to the latest movies, everyone's an expert. But would the Eberts and Roepers of the world dare to put their money where their thumbs are? Now, thanks to the Net, there's a way to do just that -- but it's illegal in the U.S. A British Web site is offering the chance to bet real money on the success or failure of new motion picture releases. The online movie-betting service is basically a futures market for films like Jurassic Park III and Planet of the Apes, instead of pork bellies.
