LEAD STORY:
"IBM server sales rise as HP's and Sun's fall, report shows"
Worldwide server sales were down for Sun Microsystems and
Hewlett-Packard last quarter. But thanks to strong sales in Unix
boxes and mainframes, IBM's server sales grew 10.4%, according to a
Dataquest report. Sun's and HP's dropped 15.4% and 10.6%,
respectively. The gap widened in US sales as IBM's were up 13.9%,

[1] "US tech job losses accelerate"
A new report finds technology job cuts in the US are picking up
steam. So far this year, cuts in the telecommunications, computer and
electronics industries totaled 358,375, compared to 26,758 in 2000.
Last month, there were 26,321 job cuts in the US computer industry,
compared with the previous month's 8,950 cuts, according to
outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

[2] "How Big Blue plays D"
IBM Research is the largest nongovernmental research and development
group in the world with eight labs in six countries and a budget of
over $5 billion. But the group stands out from other technology
hotbeds such as Bell Labs and Xerox's PARC because of Big Blue's
ability to translate scientific innovations into profitable
technology.

[3] "Wyly details his plan for CA"
If Texas billionaire Sam Wyly has his way, Computer Associates would
become four independent units thus "moving the company closer to its
customers and their specific, rapidly evolving needs." Wyly, who is
waging a proxy battle for control of CA, formally unveiled his plan
for the company last week. The plan also includes creating an "elite
national account organization" for customers who preferred dealing
with a single entity.

[4] "Dell to attack high-end server market"
Dell says next year, it will finally have the ability to compete in
the high-end server market. High-end servers draw on the power of
dozens of computer processors by linking them through a technique
called symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP). SMP uses various high-speed
communication technologies to connect the CPUs, which can then
collectively handle heavy-duty tasks. Currently, Dell's most powerful
machine is a relatively small eight-processor system. That will
change in 2002, Dell says, when the company introduces a new server
architecture called the "brick." Each brick is a four-processor
computing module that's connected to several others by way of
upcoming high-speed communication technology.

THE MISSING LINK

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Another meaning for 'film short'"
Two thumbs up... two thumbs down. When it comes to the latest movies,
everyone's an expert. But would the Eberts and Roepers of the world
dare to put their money where their thumbs are? Now, thanks to the
Net, there's a way to do just that -- but it's illegal in the U.S. A
British Web site is offering the chance to bet real money on the
success or failure of new motion picture releases. The online
movie-betting service is basically a futures market for films like
Jurassic Park III and Planet of the Apes, instead of pork bellies.
