Computer Associates founder and chairman Charles Wang said he is

[2] "New virus travels in PDF files"
There is good news and bad news on the computer virus front. The bad
news is there is a virus known as "Peachy" that uses Adobe's popular
PDF file format to spread. The good news is that the virus only
spreads with Adobe's Acrobat, not through the free readers available
for download all around the Web. Peachy exploits an Acrobat feature
that embeds files within a PDF but can only be opened using Acrobat.

[1] "Web-to-host: reducing the total cost of ownership"
This white paper written by the Tolly Group compares the cost of
traditional emulation solutions for accessing S/390 and AS/400 with
emerging thin-client Web-to-host solutions. The paper finds that
Web-to-host can reduce total cost of ownership by as much as 60
percent. Even if you disagree with the findings, read this for the
good, plain-language explanations of terms like host access, terminal
emulation, thick client and thin client.

[2] "Spotting the dead-end job: a primer"
Is the "new development" project you're considering going to be
"developing" a fix for a fifteen-year-old legacy system that uses a
technology with which you are all too familiar? If so, you are
probably being hired for those legacy skills and are unlikely to get
significant exposure to any new technology. Remind yourself that few
companies will train an outsider in a cutting-edge tool when proven
performers within the company are also clamoring for this kind of
training.

THE MISSING LINK

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Gadget with more byte than bark"
Dog owners... listen up. Ever been frustrated because you just don't
know what's gotten your moody mutt so miffed? You can soon get the
answer straight from the horse's -- make that the DOG'S -- mouth.
Inventors in Japan claim to have developed a high-tech canine
translator. The gadget, called the Bow-lingual, can supposedly
interpret a dog's barks and growls into human emotions. The
Bow-lingual consists of a small microphone, attached to the dog's
collar, that "reads" dog-speak by matching sounds to a set of
pre-programmed wave patterns. There are plans to adapt the technology
so that anxious owners, who are away from home, can be kept up to
date with their dog's feelings delivered straight to their handset.
