Lead Story:
"Data sharing: The bridge between Unix boxes and mainframes"
Do you want to try all those funky Unix-based analytics and
data warehousing applications, but your data is on a
mainframe? AXA Client Solutions turned to NewFrame's data
sharing technology to do just that. Data sharing has allowed
AXA to use mainframe data on open systems without tying up
its network or buying an expensive storage area network
(SAN).

[3] "Does Linux have a future on the desktop?"

[1] "PC power challenges mainframes"
While mainframes aren't the only choice for computing
anymore, they are far from obsolete. One Canadian IBM
official sees sales of PCs, PDAs and other computing devices
as helpful to mainframe sales. "The more server capability
and centralized data capability there is, the more you want
to own one of these devices so that you can access all of
this information," he said.

[2] "Informatica targets AS/400 and mainframe markets"
Analytics software vendor Informatica has released a product
aimed at the mainframe and AS/400 markets. PowerConnect
gives users a complete view of their systems without having
to develop COBOL data integration programs. The product can
access source data and metadata from most sources including
DB2, IMS, VSAM, ADABAS and sequential flat files.

[3] "Does Linux have a future on the desktop?"
While Linux has made inroads in the server space (including
on the S/390 and now the AS/400), its fate on the desktop
isn't so certain. Just a few weeks ago, Dell Computer Corp.
stopped offering Linux as an option for desktop systems.
Some industry watchers question whether the open source Unix
cousin will even be a force on the desktop.

[1] "A security checklist for IT managers"
Somebody out there is out to break into your network. That
somebody is six times more likely to succeed if the network
runs on Windows rather than Unix, according to a study by
BindView Corp. The good news, says BindView director of
security strategy Scott Blake in this
searchWindowsManageability interview, is that the odds
against a hacker succeeding in his nefarious attack are high
if an IT manager stays on top of a few mundane security
management tasks.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Workers use e-mail for flirting"
The office romance has gone digital. Workers surveyed in
Britain confessed to various forms of on-the-job e-mail
abuses, and flirting in the virtual office was No. 1 on the
offenders' hit parade. Men were the biggest offenders with
27% admitting sending their romantic overtures through an e-
mail server as compared to 13% of the women. Women said
their biggest abuse was planning their social life or
gossiping. Forwarding porn and jokes also ranked high on the
list.
