*Code correction to yesterday's developer tip "Practicing safe HEX"*
For those of you that received yesterday's Developer Tip, there was
incorrect code that Jim Keohane has since fixed. It is as follows:
The fix is to remove all COBOL SIGN specifications (the S's) from PIC
clauses. The S caused the compiler to generate a ZAP (zero and add
packed) machine instruction to set the sign. ZAP is actual math and
will
crash if data is invalid.

Please find "05 FROM-S9" and change "PIC S9" to "PIC 9".
Please find "10 TO-AS-IS" and change "PIC S9' to "PIC X".
Please find "10 TO-PACKED" and change "PIC S9" to "PIC 9".
Though not required it would be cllearer to change FROM-S9 to FROM-9
in
two places.

Speaking of tips, Jim Keohane wants your feedback! He posted a
request for feedback in our developer discussion forum. What do you
think of his tips, past and present? Anything in particular you'd
like him to write about in the future? Let us know. Post your

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"AOL CD protest takes off"
An organized effort is under way to rid the world of those annoying
AOL software CDs that clog your snail-mailbox on a weekly basis.
Citing "needless pollution" caused by the disks, a group of eco-aware
Internet users put together a Web site called nomoreaolcds.com at the
start of this month with the stated goal of collecting one million
disks. Once collected, they plan to pollute the front lawn of AOL's
U.S. headquarters with them. More than 20 days into their campaign,
the site said it has collected 25 disks. At this rate, AOL will have
a major cleanup on its hands in just under 3,000 years.
