This week's question was answered by Tom Moulder, search390's
Database Management Expert.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:

Q: Can you please point me to where I can find information on how to
move databases from one DB2 engine to another? Our situation is that
we have an OS/390 2.4 system with DB2510 on one partition. We have an
OS/390 2.9 system on another partition with DB2512 on another
partition. I would like to know how to migrate the databases from
the old DB2 engine to the other when they are on separate partitions.

A: Here are places to look at in the DB2 manuals:

In the Administration Guide look at Section 2.11 under the topic
moving DB2 data. This assumes that you have the DDL that created the
structure and simply want to move data to populate the new objects.

If you do not have the original DDL, there are a number of tools that
will read the catalog and generate this DDL for you. The Control
Center comes to mind. What you did not say is whether the DASD is
shared between the two LPARs. The task is easier if the DASD is
shared. Here is a simple list of the items that must be taken into
consideration when you attempt to migrate a DB2 application:

1. The DDL for the source objects mujst be available in some file or
there must be a method to generate the DDL for re-creating the
objects that you want to migrate.
2. There must be a method of moving the data. Look at the
Administration Guide for the no-cost options that come with DB2.
3. There must be a method to move the applications that access this
data. Hopefully the DBRMLIB is shared, otherwise you will need to
copy this library so that it can be used in the compile and bind
process on the target system. All of the plans and packages for the
source system should be bound on the target system.
4. Finally, be sure to account for stored procedures if you have
begun using them.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions as you look
into this project. I have greatly simplified this process in this
answer.

Also, you should know that BMC, CA, Candle and IBM all have for-cost
products that will automate this process. Based on the number of
times that this process must be repeated, you might want to
investigate these offerings to determine if they are cost justified.
