Nada! | by Jim Keohane COBOL, the undead. In this tip, Jim lists the top four reasons why. Inertia: The Y2K effort had the added benefit of giving data centers an accurate picture of their software codebase. Wholesale conversions of the large COBOL codebase was often too daunting. Instead, maintenance is continued in COBOL, significant new development is done in COBOL and much of the legacy COBOL business logic is "wrappered" to be invoked from newer languages... But it is. You can't believe someone else's horribly obtuse and convoluted revisions to your code, though much faster, are an acceptable answer. You positively cringe at the future maintenance issues after seeing the assembler routine version, though fastest by far, that was lovingly handcrafted by the resident bit-twiddler in a non-intuitive use of esoteric machine instructions. Calm down. Take a chill pill. In some cases, you have to make a trade off. Hexadecimally Challenged" tip. I'm curious as to how many noticed the neat trick embodied in Mark's version where he uses packed and zoned decimal conversion for fields WS-ONUM-DISPLAY and WS-ONUM-DECIMAL. Many folks would be concerned about the dreaded S0C7 ABEND's due to invalid numerics. No need to worry. Mark's code clearly practiced safe HEX.
