LEAD STORY

GARTNER: BIG BLUE IS LIKE COMFORT FOOD | News: ZDNet
The recent economic downturn has many enterprises choosing to
maintain and upgrade their installed infrastructures, instead of
gambling on new and often unproven technologies. The mainframe market
-- one of IBM's traditional strengths -- is a case in point.

SOLARIS, AIX HOLE SAID TO LEAVE COMPUTERS WIDE OPEN | News: Reuters
A CERT advisory warns Solaris 8 and AIX 4.3 and 5.1 users of a
vulnerability in the respective operating systems' login programs
that allow remote access to the system. Attackers can gain system
access only certain remote command protocols are enabled (and most,
like Telnet, are by default). Internet Security Systems said it has
been monitoring cracker chat rooms and learned that exploit code is
already in the works. Sun and IBM have not reported any incidents.

HP'S IBM ENVY | News: Forbes
Hewlett-Packard and Compaq have been trying to "fix" their PC
businesses for at least five years. Meanwhile, IBM -- the company HP

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER | by Jim
Keohane

How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

Practice? Naaah! Lead collaboratively!

There is a organizational methodology called the "Orpheus Process"
that sprang from the classical music world: the conductorless Orpheus
Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The "Orpheus
Process" is now making inroads into the business world. I see
potential applicability to software development? So might you.

THE MISSING LINK | Christmas: A $157 million hangover

The holidays are more like the "holidaze" in Britain. Apparently
workers there love their Christmas parties, and virgin eggnog won't
do. A new survey shows each year two million workers in the UK get so
wasted at the company's holiday soiree, they have to call in sick the
next day or days -- too hung over to work. But employers are the ones
really getting hammered. They'll lose a sobering $157 million thanks
to the sickout. The survey also found men at the parties drink double
the amount their female colleagues quaff, polishing off an average 11
units of alcohol -- the same as five pints of beer or 11 glasses of
wine. Sherry Christmas!
