 From the News Editor:

by Kate Evans-Correia, News Editor

IBM's interest in the open-source operating system Linux is hardly a secret. The company earmarked $1 billion for Linux initiatives last year, introducing products and services to help promote its adoption. Therefore, it came as no surprise to most users that Big Blue announced it would offer a Linux-only mainframe. IBM believes the opportunity for a Linux-only zSeries is great, not only for them in terms of revenue, but also for their customers, who are looking to consolidate servers onto an open-source platform. But, some analysts say they're not so sure the Linux-only server will wow mainframe users, even though, from a cost-perspective, it could be a viable option for many Big Iron shops. Do you share their viewpoint or do you plan to invest in a Linux-only server? Share your views with us. E-mail Kate Evans-Correia, Senior News Editor .com, with your thoughts. And, take our poll here.

Tip of the Week:
Jim Keohane claims to know a fair amount. What he doesn't know he claims to be able to figure out. What he doesn't know and can't figure out he claims to know where to look. What he doesn't know and can't figure out and can't find he claims to know whom to ask. Though he's miserly hoarding the names, at least we got some of his favorite Web hunting grounds within which to look for WebSphere goodies.
