BITS TWIDDLED WHILE-U-WAIT! | by Jim Keohane

This time, Jim's developer tip not only concerns "thinking outside
the box" when crafting algorithms but also delves into proper
comportment during technical interviews. It could be subtitled "Why
smart alecks don't get job offers!" The tip shows that there are many
ways in programming to skin a cat, and the first you think of
probably isn't the best.

WHAT IS THE COST TO TRANSFER DATA? | by Gerhard Adam

Dear Ask the Expert,
What is the cost (actual financial expense) to transfer data? How do
I find out? I ask around and everyone I ask just says, "Well it costs
something but I don't know. Go ask somebody else." What are the
variables that factor into how much it really costs to transfer data?
How can I determine if it is actually financially more feasible to
use a pre-transfer compression utility like PKZIP MVS or just
continue what I'm doing? I know that if I compress data before I FTP,
the data will get there faster, but how does this translate into
money?

THE MISSING LINK | Microsoft infuses new BMWs with Windows CE

The BMW 7 Series: a big price tag, luscious leather, heavenly
handling, power windows...and Windows. The newest top-of-the-line
Bimmers come with Bill Gates on the dash -- in the form of Windows
CE. The OS will power the dashboard control display, and BMW hopes it
will make everything from finding the right song on the right CD to
entering destinations into the navigation device easier. One thing
you must credit to Microsoft -- the company has drive.
