According to recent studies, more than half of all IT workers with mainframe experience are over 50 years old. As a result, it is increasingly difficult to find young mainframe-savvy professionals to replace or build on to existing staff. Some consider this a looming IT crisis that has the potential to impact organizations that use mainframes as part of their enterprise IT infrastructure.
I noticed that AFCOM, a data center industry association, is hosting a teleconference on this subject on Tuesday, April 16. You can participate in the one-hour discussion scheduled for 1:30 a.m. EST by dialing into 800-556-3831, pass code: 00468. International callers need to dial 972-512-0694 and enter the same pass code as above.
In the meantime, we are hoping you could let us know if there is a "looming" crisis and if so, how bad is it? Do you feel outdated as a mainframe professional? Do you believe interest in the mainframe is being cast aside for more sexy technology? Or, has this supposed crisis given you the opportunity to call the shots? Maybe you don't view this as a crisis at all. And, if you're under the age of 40, we'd really like to know why you chose to enter the mainframe world. Contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and take our poll.

How can I WAS Java invoke CICS using EJB without using the CICS Transaction Gateway?
That's what Search390 user "TSG001" wants to know. "We have a z/OS machine running CICS TS 1.3 and WAS 4.01 along with an HTTP server, Java 1.3 and DB2 7.1. What options are available for connecting Java to CICS through WAS using EJB, and without using the CICS Transaction Gateway (CTG)."
Jim Keohane responded with his top 11 ways to WAS Java invoke CICS. Go to the WebSphere-Web Integration forum to read his response or post one of your own. |

| Tip of the Week: |
| WebSphere Application Server's (WAS) lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) registry has proven to be a boon to WAS administration.
Take the task of managing user rights and permissions in WAS 4.0. You might first be inclined to use the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) to make changes of this kind in your LDAP registry. Exploited in this fashion, however, JNDI doesn't give you an easy way of assigning WAS roles for users, which means that any changes that you want to make need to be committed on a per-user basis. This approach can quickly become onerous. |
