IBM SERVES UP $350 MILLION AD CAMPAIGN | News: Reuters
IBM is putting its money where its mouth is. As it said it would, the
company is spending an estimated $350 million on an ad campaign that
will hype the company's server, software, services and storage units
-- every major business except personal computers, which have their
own campaign. The new campaign will consume "virtually 100 percent"
of IBM's ad budget for the remainder of 2002.

IT managers are fed up with security vulnerabilities in the software
products they purchase, and many are fighting back with language in
contracts that holds software companies liable for breaches and
attacks that exploit their products.
IBM AUSTRALIA MIGRATING TO LINUX | News: ZDNet
About 10,000 IBM employees in its Australian offices are moving to
Linux. The migration includes one IBM Unix backup server running IBM
AIX and Tivoli Storage Manager.

Only a day after announcing a new Web services security
specification, IBM on Friday rolled out new security features in its
Web Services Toolkit that support the specification.
IBM INKS DEAL WITH SPANISH TELECOM UNIT | News: Reuters
IBM signed a three-year $90 million agreement with Telefonica Data
USA, a unit of Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica. Big Blue
will provide the hardware and software that will let the telco
provide off-site data storage to international companies, charging
customers by the gigabyte.

THE MISSING LINK | The science of pitching, redux
Major league baseball pitchers can no longer rely on Vaseline, nail
files or the once-popular spitball to get a leg up on the
muscle-bound sluggers that permeate today's big leagues. So,
technology is lending a hand. Blessed with one of the best young
pitching rotations in baseball, the Oakland Athletics are utilizing a
new motion mapping application to study the mechanics of its hurlers.
Developed in conjunction with the American Sports Medicine Institute
in Birmingham, Ala., the system lets the A's compare its pitchers'
form with the delivery of some Hall of Fame greats. Even America's
pastime isn't immune from some high-tech help!
