July is a time for celebration, BBQs and spending time with family and friends. At Search390, it's also time for the July tips contest.
For those who may not be familiar with our tips contest, here's how it works. Each month, we give a prize to the user who submitted the tip that receives the highest rating from the Search390 community of experts and users. As an added perk, the top tips will be named to our tips hall of fame.
We're happy to announce our June tips contest winner Joseph Kohler. Joseph won the Samsung DVD-S221 DVD/MP3 player for submitting his tip, ISPF edit macro: COBSUMPD. Runners-up include Ken Hubbard's Clean up JES2 spool, Michael Simpson's Finding section, copybooks, etc., and Duncan Turner's Command syntax remembered.
For your chance to become a member of our winner's circle, simply submit whatever time saving tip or trick you've come up with that you think will be of value to the 390 community. Once your tip is submitted and approved, we'll post it to the Web site in the appropriate tip category: Developer, WebSphere, CICS, Storage, Career, Systems Management and Performance Management. Then, Search390 users get to view and rate the tip. If your tip receives the highest rating at the end of the contest date -- July 31 for this month's contest -- you win!
This month's prize is a Rio One digital audio player. It supports multiple audio formats including MP3 and Windows Media (WMA), and delivers up to an hour of skip-free digital music with 32MB of upgradeable on-board. So if you want to store your favorite songs on one portable device, here's your chance.
Send in your tips today.
Good luck!

What are the different ways to run a job from CICS? This is the question Search390 user "Samaga" recently asked in the Developer forum: "Can a COBOL program running in CICS call a Rexx program that will submit batch jobs? If not, what are the different ways to run a job from CICS?"
A Search390 member offers one approach: To construct and write JCL to a special TDQ that writes to the internal reader. What approach would you take?

Workload manager - Performance tips
When running WLM in GOAL mode, have you noticed that when resources get tight nothing acts the way you thought it would? The service policies may be too top heavy, failing to allow any leeway in decisions. Systems management expert Gerhard Adam offers his advice about categorizing work into importance levels in Performance tip #1.
Another point to consider is what objectives should actually be defined for a workload and how to tell whether it is adequate. For Gerhard's advice, check out Performance tip #2.
