C STRINGS IN A COBOL, PL/I, S/390 ASSEMBLER WORLD | by Jim Keohane

How can your C strings handle COBOL LOW-VALUES in a record/field? Why
must you count up to a NULL byte in order to determine a string's
length when you're used to separate length fields from COBOL, PL/I
and assembler legacy data? Why does C think "Hello" is lower than
"Hello " when COBOL and PL/I think both literals are equal?
Different strokes, folks. Here's some help for those legacy cases.

NEED HELP OPENING A FILE USING C IN OS/390? | by Jim Keohane

Dear Ask the Experts,
I want to open a file using C in OS/390. My C code is using fopen
("a.c","rb"). This code works in DOS/Windows/Linux for a file in the
current directory. However, in OS/390, I am not able to open the
file. I understand that the mainframe has a different file structure.
I am using JCL to compile and run my C code. How do I open a file in
the current directory?

REAL BIT TWIDDLERS DON'T CODE IN C! | by Jim Keohane

Jim Keohane was taken aback by some complaints that there were just C
code examples, not assembler examples, in his tip "Bits Twiddled
While-U-Wait!" To assuage some of his fellow assemblerholics, here
are portions of the original C code examples along with the S/370
assembler equivalents. There's even a playback of the various bit
values in mid twiddle.

CA SLAPS LAWSUIT ON RIVAL QUEST | News: vnunet

Computer Associates is suing rival software firm Quest over the
alleged theft of trade secrets. CA claims that former employees of
Platinum Technology, a company acquired by CA in 1999, stole the
source code and used it to build products when they later came to
work at Quest.

SEARCH390 DISCUSSION FORUMS | Can you help with CICS abend dump?

Search390 member "Samaga" posted the following in the Developer forum
and needs your help: "How can we read a CICS abend dump in formatted
mode? What are the default datasets that CICS writes to during an
abend? Can we directly read that dataset as soon as the abend has
occured? This dump reading is restricted to abends from DB2 and CICS.
What might be the key for these datasets?"

THE MISSING LINK | Oops! True IT blooper #44: Not my fault!

Why is the office cubicle of IT administrator Kenny Rivera now known
as Kenny's Grill? To find out, return with Rivera to a night when he
burned the midnight oil and a few other things, too. Let's just say,
his new dish, chicken-fried motherboard, won't appear on any menus
