Many years ago, when I was blending iced lattes and cappuccinos at a famous coffee establishment, I learned about the "third place." They believed the third place was that special place you liked to visit- one that wasn't home, wasn't work, but was instead a "third place" that you enjoyed going to and where you felt comfortable.
I'd like for you to think of Search390 as your third place. The place you like to visit and one that you find helpful, brings you pleasure, and makes your day a bit better.
Although not a physical location, Search390 has many places to visit. Ask the Experts, for example. We've assembled a panel of some of the best and most respected members of the 390 community who are available to answer your technical questions daily. Or, if you'd like to catch up on the latest industry trends and news, stop by our daily news section. We also have specialized technical tips and over 1500 Best Web Links, as well as discussion forums- great places to interact with your peers and swap ideas, code, advice, best practices, and more.
To ensure you're getting the most out of every visit, we want to know what brings you to Search390, and what keeps you coming back. Please let me know if there is anything we haven't thought of that would make your Search390 experience more enjoyable.
So grab a cup o' Joe, relax, and make us your third place.

Is IBM making you pay for compatibility? That's what Search390 member lynlinks wants to know.
"I realize VS COBOL & COBOL II applications will continue to run under Z/OS, but I was told there were associated costs from IBM to be able to do that. I was told the costs were close to $16K/month. Is that true? Is IBM charging customers for that compatibility under z/OS?"
Do you know if the above is true or not? Please share your thoughts with lynlinks.
Many of Search390's members have questions concerning compatibility concerning COBOL and z/OS. Check out last week's featured topic "Migrating to z/OS with COBOL" for more information.

| Tip of the Week: |
Emulation is the sincerest form of flattery
By: Jim Keohane
Amdahl announced, not too long ago, that they weren't pursuing IBM mainframe compatibility down the 64-bit path. Well, an Amdahl spin-off called Platform Solutions, Inc. is taking IBM mainframe compatibility down a path that is definitely 64 bits wide.
