A reunion is taking place that may strike a chord with fans of Linux on the mainframe -- and I'm not referring to the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tour.
VM, IBM's 30-year-old virtualization software, is getting some renewed attention. So much so that one z/VM user group is reconvening after a three-year hiatus.
According to a recent announcement by Linuxcare, a surge of z/VM license purchases has sparked the revival of IBM's z/VM BayBunch user group in San Francisco, Calif.
The demand for z/VM software and skills comes in conjunction with the momentum of Linux on IBM eServer zSeries mainframes. The software provides an environment where copies of Linux can be run in multiple "virtual machines," allowing customers to consolidate many applications on one system.
With hundreds of z/VM users in the Bay Area and continual z/VM license purchases, the user group is expected to have strong attendance, said Robert Kusche, president of Systek Services, a sponsor of the user group.
Have you jumped on the z/VM bandwagon? Are you currently running Linux on z/VM? Would you like to see more user group discussion on z/VM or Linux on the mainframe? What user groups do you currently belong to? What questions do you have about Linux on the mainframe? Let us know what you'd like to see covered on this topic.

How do I compare the basic S/390 OS options?
This question was recently posed by Search390.com user "imwondering" in the Operating Systems forum: "What are the advantages and disadvantages of the three basic S/390 OS choices -- Linux, Unix and OS/390 -- considering the usual parameters like uptime, response time, speed, reliability, usability, cost (Linux probably takes the cake for this one), capabilities, scalability, etc?"

Practice safe threads
By Jim Keohane
If you think "compare and swap" refers to activities of swinging married suburban couples, then you've read one too many of Jim's tips. It's actually a technique, usually implemented in hardware for the safe concurrent updating of shared storage, which is required to get the OTE performance boost. See suggested COBOL, C and S/390 assembler code examples for more information.
