One thing we like to do on a regular basis is ask users what's on their minds. The answer we often hear: The state of the mainframe job market. One senior technical analyst recently shared his viewpoint on this topic after I asked about the most important problem he currently faces regarding the mainframe. His response was the cost of maintaining the mainframe vs. implementing new Unix packages -- and what that ultimately means for his career. He said that management tends to see the mainframe as expensive and Unix as cheap, and that independent software vendor (ISV) costs will drive the need to replace outdated mainframe applications with Unix-based packages. He said he's already seen Unix replace the majority of mainframe applications at his site -- and the demand for mainframe skills are going out the window with it. What do you think?
