CICS MAPPING FOR THE XML-CHALLENGED | by Jim Keohane

There are a number of commercial products that enable Web invocation
of CICS 3270 applications via the 3270 bridge feature. This offers
multiple advantages. For one, it gives you the ability to Web-enable
an existing legacy app without changing that app. Yet another,
not-so-obvious advantage is being able to write new apps solely for
Web invocation without requiring Web knowledge on the part of the
programmer. Read more about the advantages in this tip.

HOW TO CREATE A USER INTERFACE THROUGH THE WEB? | by Jim Keohane

Dear Ask the Expert,
We have an MVS/ISPF-based menu driven user interface to a "back-end
work server" address space. What is the easiest way to create a
similar (same external look) user interface through the Web? We don't
want to use TN3270 emulation.

ROLL YOUR OWN SCRIPTING -- USE LUA | by Jim Keohane

Jim Keohane points out the advantage of a scripting facility within
CICS (or on the same host as CICS) to reduce ping-ponging between
host and Web app for multiple COMMAREA or screen interactions, to
allow for rapid prototyping and ad hoc usage, to simplify Web access
to the back end without too much of a CPU penalty and, best of all,
to underwrite Jim's "play time."

HELP WITH STRINGS CONSIDERATIONS FOR ESDS FILES? | by Robert Harris

Dear Ask the Expert,
I read in the CICS Performance Guide that "there are some special
performance considerations when choosing a STRINGS value for an ESDS
file. If an ESDS is used as an 'add-only' file (that is, it is used
only in write mode to add records to the end of the file), a string
number of 1 is strongly recommended. Any string number greater than 1
can significantly affect performance because of exclusive control
conflicts that occur when more than one task attempts to write to the
ESDS at the same time."

Would you be able to elaborate on the principle behind this
statement?

SEARCH390 DISCUSSION FORUMS | Developer

Search390.com user "Samaga" posted the following in the Developer
forum and received some advice from Jim Keohane: "We can implement MQ
Series in CICS, but can we do MQ Messaging/Notifications in TSO
through batch jobs? If yes, is there any difference in the
implementation when compared to CICS? Can we call MQPUT1 from both
CICS and batch?"
