LEAD STORY

MAINFRAME CONTINUES TO TOP GARTNER OLTP LIST | News: SearchHP.com

IBM's mainframe once again came out on top in Gartner's online
transaction processing (OLTP)/database serving evaluation. Some
servers, however, are starting to close the gap.

IBM CUTS FINANCE RATES TO LURE CUSTOMERS | News: Financial Times
IBM said Monday it would cut financing costs for hardware to as low
as 4.2%, from 5%. The computer giant also said it would offer a
90-day deferral period for all financing costs -- an open invitation
for companies to spend on technology before the end of this year. The
finance offering, dubbed "triple zero," emulates the zero-rate
financing deals that have been needed to fuel automobile sales in the
U.S. in recent months.

IBM TO USE LINUX FOR 'BLUE GENE' SUPERCOMPUTER | News: CNET
Linux will be the main operating system for IBM's upcoming family of
"Blue Gene" supercomputers -- a major endorsement for the operating
system and the open-source computing model it represents. These
supercomputers, expected out by late 2005, will be able to perform a
quadrillion calculations per second (one petaflop).

LINUX TO DOMINATE ON SERVERS | News: InfoWorld
A new report suggests that by the end of the decade, Linux will reign
as the lead operating system. Proprietary Unix operating systems from
HP, IBM and Sun will suffer as many businesses are drawn to the open
source OS by the lower cost of operation and the increasing quality
of service.

NEXT LINUX DUE BY JUNE | News: ZDNet
A new Linux kernel is expected out by early summer. The programming
collaborative that issues these releases isn't known for its
punctuality, but the project founder Linus Torvalds says other key
developers have adopted a more structured approach for transforming
the 2.5 "development" branch of the OS to the 2.6 version intended
for real-world use.

BMC SHARES FALL AS REVENUES DISAPPOINT | News: Reuters
Shares of BMC Software dropped more than 6% percent on Friday, a day
after the maker of mainframe and network management software posted
quarterly profits but said sales of key software products declined.

THE MISSING LINK | A site that counts: 1880 U.S. census goes online

If the past is your pastime, you'll need a crowbar to pry yourself
away from http://www.familysearch.org/. That's where you'll find the
1880 U.S. census -- the first complete, searchable and free census to
go online. You can get on there and find out what your ancestors were
doing and where they were doing it long before you were a glimmer in
their descendants' eyes. Volunteers with the Mormon church have been
typing their tails off for 17 years to get all the information --
some 50 million entries -- loaded into computers. The site also has
the British and Canadian censuses from 1881.
