It's the end-of-the-year crunch. You're scrambling to meet deadlines, squeezing money out of any last resources you may have, and planning for next year's projects and budgets. You may read articles and tips about new products, hardware and software enhancements and add-ons for the mainframe, but are these enhancements realistic purchases for you and your organization? Do you have the money and time to implement new bells and whistles? If you've got the budget, great - start spending! If you don't, then it's once again time to improvise and find new ways to utilize what you already have in place.

Search 390.com's featured topics, Best Web links, advanced search, interactive discussion forums and Webcast archives are just some ways to get you started. Take a moment to surf the site and see what resources can help you. If you don't find the information you need, send me an email and we'll do our best to assist you.

This Week: In the forums
>> Search390.com user young3 posted this in the Developer forum and needs your help:

Hi, I would like to migrate some metadata from a mainframe environment to XML files. I need to know how to go about coding this in either COBOL, ASSEMBLER, or REXX. The Metadata contains application with programs all versionised. I need to checkout the versionised files and check in into XML files.

Any suggestions out there? If you can help, please post your response here.

>> I received an email from a Search390.com user that said this:

I've been searching everywhere for a routine to convert local time to UTC in PL/I. I am a program that needs to add the UTC to the "RCVTIME" parameter. I've hard coded the current UTC (-0500) but would like to generate it through PL/I so that when DTS happens, it will automatically change to -0600 and vice-versa.

The program she is referring to is posted in the Developer forum in three separate posts: # 671-674. If you can help, please post a response here.

Tip of the Week:
Linux and server consolidation
by Carol Hildebrand
Mentioning Linux and server consolidation in one sentence brings up a host of different opinions, ranging from "What a great idea!" to "What, are you crazy?" But the fact is, server consolidation is a hot topic -- as is anything with the potential to save money these days. Add Linux, and people think that the opportunity to cut cost through space consolidation, workforce reduction and software savings could be huge.
