IBM DROPS MAINFRAME LICENSE MANAGER TOOL | News: cw360
IBM has nixed plans for a mainframe software license manager tool.
Users are relieved about the move because it means they no longer
have to be concerned about the extended implementation time and heavy
administrative burden it would have imposed. The move also eliminated
the concern that the tool could be used to shut down software at user
sites for failure to comply with license terms.

EXPERT: COMPANIES NEED OPEN-SOURCE | News: SearchWindows2000.com
Linux and open-source software aren't for every situation, but with
Windows licensing costs on the rise, lots of IT administrators in
traditional Windows shops are looking more closely at all of their
options. A co-founder of the Apache Software Foundation tells
SearchWin2000.com where enterprise Linux and open-source are gaining
traction in the heavily-Windowed world of IT.

JDE SEES DECENT 2002, BUT CONCERNS LINGER | News: The Four Hundred
J.D. Edwards had a pretty good fourth quarter and considering this is
a bright spot in a rough couple of years, everyone should be happy,
right? Not quite.

IBM'S RATIONALE TO BUY RATIONAL | News: Computerworld
Analysts say IBM's $2.1 billion buy of Rational Software will allow
Big Blue to provide a software development environment for clients
that want to integrate their business processes and software
infrastructure. A whopping 98% of the Fortune 100 companies,
including IBM, use Rational's tools.

META PREDICTS MS WILL OFFER LINUX SOFTWARE | News: Reuters
Despite the fact that Microsoft denies it has plans to develop
software based on Linux, market research firm META Group is
predicting that the software giant will introduce software based on
the open-source operating system in 2004 for Web services and server
software.
