LEAD STORY

SOFTWARE MAINTENANCE PINCHES BUDGETS | News: cw360

IT shops are being squeezed by software firms who are increasingly
charging more for maintenance and dropping support for older
products. Because IBM handles software upgrades and maintenance
differently than other vendors, the pinch isn't so severe for
mainframe shops. Still, experts warn all administrators need to keep
an eye on creeping maintenance costs.

INDIANA U. ACCEPTS IBM'S INTEGRATION PRODUCTS | News: Computerworld
Indiana University has given IBM's new Xperanto integration
technology high marks, and plans to implement it. IBM yesterday
announced the release of DB2 Information Integrator and DB2
Information Integrator for Content, and at least one analyst
predicted that the new software would change the enterprise
information integration (EII) landscape.

RED HAT AGGRESSIVE WITH PREMIUM LINUX | News: CNET
Red Hat is aggressively pushing its premium operating system products
using support contracts, pricing changes and certification
restrictions to drive customers and partners to its more expensive
"advanced" line. Sources say the leading Linux seller is betting its
high-end products will dramatically boost its finances.

IBM NABS FORD CONTRACT | News: Reuters
IBM has won a computer services contract with Ford Motor, breaking
the long-standing grip of rival Electronic Data Systems on top U.S.
automakers. IBM said Ford would purchase between 4,000 and 5,500
copies of IBM's software used by computer-based product designers and
provide consulting services and support as part of the multiyear
deal.

THE MISSING LINK | Guarding the Net: Gabriel leads patron saint pack

You can hear the band playing the new song now -- "When the Saints Go
Surfing In". The Vatican is trying to decide who will be the patron
saint of the Internet, the one to pray to when you need a higher
power for protection from hackers, pop-ups and so forth. Right now,
the archangel Gabriel has a spirited lead, but there is some quality
competition, including a Polish priest who believed in using
technology to spread the word. Saint Clare of Assisi is also in the
running, despite being the current patron saint of television. Can
there be a Saint of All Media? We should know by Easter. Stay tuned.
