The school hopes to investigate grid computing, a method of spreading calculations across groups of machines. While the purchase of the system is big news for grid computing proponents, IBM is trumpeting another milestone. This z800 system is the 1000th of the "Rapton" systems sold since IBM released them in March 2002. IDC: SERVER SALES GROW 15%, LINUX A 'BRIGHT SPOT' | NewsFactor IDC announced a 15.2% growth in Q4 server sales from the previous quarter, though revenue was down 5.2%. One analyst said this points to more predictability in the market later this year while another said software that efficiently utilizes server capacity is a big factor in the revenue downturn. IDC identified Linux servers as the bright spot of Q4 with $607 million in sales. Unix sales, by comparison, totaled $5 billion. IBM DELIVERS SOAP FOR CICS | cw360 IBM is to offer a Customer Information Control System (CICS) Soap Technology Preview designed to help developers build connections to its CICS-based mainframe applications through Web services.
