LEAD STORY

Q&A: JUSTIFYING THE COST OF LINUX | Search390.com
Linux is emerging as flexible e-business tool but some mainframers
have their concerns about the complexity and expense of migrating to
the open-source operating system. Linux expert David Boyes said that
while those concerns are valid, migration to Linux doesn't have to be
a problem. However, administrators need to follow a few simple
guidelines.

'ON-DEMAND': EXPERTS OUTLINE LINK TO WEB SERVICES
IBM's e-business on-demand strategy has received a fair amount of
attention recently, but the esoteric concept has left Web services
professionals wondering how the approach will affect them in the
months and years to come. (SearchWebServices.com)

IBM ANNOUNCES ENHANCEMENTS TO DB2 CONTENT MANAGER
Many companies have petabytes of unstructured data in the form of
e-mails, audio files and images that are floating uselessly through
file systems virtually inaccessible to users, according to IBM. On
Tuesday, Big Blue announced new versions of it content management
products that are designed to let users manipulate such data as if it
were structured like the data that resides in relational databases.

NEW CODE RED VARIANT PACKS LITTLE PUNCH | SearchSecurity.com
Code Red.F surfaced this week, but it has gained little traction,
unlike its predecessors. The new variant differs from previous
versions in that it no longer contains an internal kill switch that
shuts down the worm if the calendar year is greater than 2001.
Current antivirus signatures detect Code Red.F. Experts also said
that patched IIS servers are also safe against Code Red.F.

ASK THE EXPERT | Dave Jones

We have just started a z/VM project and are trying to get a handle on
the real storage requirements (ballpark figure) to run z/VM as a
host, a test z/VM virtual machine and 6 Linux virtual machines (2
print servers, 2 file servers, 1 proxy server, and 1 general purpose
test image). We will be running Redhat. The configuration will be on
an ILF on a z-800.

THE MISSING LINK | German firm gives talking washing machine a spin

The pink underwear phenomenon may soon fade into the hamper of
history, thanks to a wise washing machine named Hermine. This
laundress is loaded with speech recognition software, so you can
order her to do things like "Soak, then wash at 95 degrees, spin at
1,400 rotations, and start in half an hour." Or you could just say,
"Please, lady, no shrinkage, and ask the dryer to give up that other
sock." Hermine also can talk -- she'll give you advice on how to get
out stains ("Grape juice? Forget it!"), whether you may use bleach,
and how to separate whites and colors ("Get that red sweater out of
here!"). Just make sure you can speak German. A speech recognition
firm in Regensburg developed Hermine and introduced her this week at
Hanover's CeBIT fair.
