IBM JAPAN TO INTRODUCE LOW-PRICED MAINFRAME | Dow Jones
IBM Japan will introduce mainframe computers to corporate clients at
roughly half the price of comparable models currently offered. Price
competition has been heating up among U.S. and Japanese computer
makers to take advantage of proposed tax breaks aimed at lifting
corporate capital investment in information technology.

THE BOTTOM LINE ON DATABASE MIGRATION | ECommerce Times
Database migrations are increasingly common, should occur in
piecemeal fashion, and IT teams should be ready for a long-term
project, according to Gartner's Betsy Burton. At the same time,
database migrations can also provide long-term payoffs. For example,
IBM has offered incentives for its DB2 product to Informix database
customers considering migrating.

ASK THE EXPERT | Robert Harris

We were using sockets in CICS but had to convert to using TCP/IP
services. I am not too familiar with this facility. To complicate the
situation, we want to use DNS services but can't find any material on
its installation. Can you assist me with the definitions I need to
use DNS services in CICS with TCP/IP services?

THE MISSING LINK | Glitch prices handhelds at $12 each

Talk about rock-bottom prices -- Amazon.com had some iPaq Pocket PCs
priced a few layers below the shale. The handhelds were listed on
Amazon's U.K. site for a shade under $12. That's a savings of $437
off the regular price. But those prices didn't last long; the
handhelds were trespassing in the bargain basement. Amazon discounted
the discount and said that an internal snafu had plundered the price
tags. The company won't honor any orders placed for $12 iPaqs. (CNET)
