STORAGE SOFTWARE TAKES CENTER STAGE | CNET
KeyBank, an Ohio-based financial services company, needed the right
program to ensure data stored on mainframes was being effectively
duplicated in case of disaster. It ended up cutting a deal with IBM,
eventually purchasing some 31TB of storage while Big Blue manages the
bank's backup facility.

GARTNER: IBM POISED FOR IT SPENDING UPSWING | The Four Hundred
Gartner analysts are forecasting forecasting a general upturn for the
technology sector and added that IBM is the company best positioned
to take advantage of the pending turnaround.

IBM UNVEILS HEFTY STORAGE CONTROLLER | CNET
IBM unveiled a SAN controller last week specially configured on
X-Series IBM servers to ensure reliability. The new software uses
four 2-gigabit-per-second Fibre Channel interfaces, a 4GB cache and
dual 2.4GHz Pentium 4 chips to manage heterogeneous hard-disk storage
independently of application servers--which is known as storage
virtualization.

SUN PLANS PER-EMPLOYEE ORION PRICING | CNET
Sun is nearing the final decision on how its customers will pay for
Orion, the company's plan to integrate all of its server software
into Solaris. Sun's executive vice president of software, Jonathan
Schwartz, says rates for the Orion package will be linked to the size
of a company's staff. Schwartz also confirmed plans to do away with
Sun's own version of Linux and said the first version of Orion will
be available later this year.

DOLLARS ARE DRIVING IBM'S OPEN-SOURCE STRATEGY | e-Pro Magazine
Even as IBM earns praise for its company-wide strategy around open
standards and open-source software, many say the commitment is pure
economics. IBM clearly realizes money can be made around open-source
initiatives, even if that means giving away some code here and there.

DATA CENTER TIP | Previewing 'smart' systems, part 1

Systems that can manage and "heal" themselves with minimal human
intervention will likely become reality. But it will be at least a
decade before the complex maze of products required for true
"self-healing systems" are fully up to the task, and it will take
even more time for the technology to reach the majority of users in
corporate America.

THE MISSING LINK | Teen got too much game, gets gamey

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be gamers. One mom in Romania
could write a country song with that title. She recently got her son
back -- he'd been held captive by his intense love for a computer
game. The 14-year-old spent nine days and nights gaming and probably
would have been game for more had he not collapsed, at an Internet
cafe, from physical and mental exhaustion. His mom says he lost 18
pounds, missed a big chunk of school and forgot about the joys of
soap and deodorant, thanks to his online obsession. She's pushing
government officials to bar kids from Internet cafes after 10 p.m.
