 From the Editor:

Are mainframes ancient relics of a time past, or state of the art supercomputers? IBM would have you believe the latter, but competitors like Sun Microsystems are singing a different tune. Who is on the right side of history in this seemingly endless debate? I'd like to know what you think.

Sun essentially believes that mainframes are too expensive and not flexible enough. IBM on the other hand says newer technologies like Linux have breathed new life into the mainframe. The only thing the companies can agree on is the fact that they both want your business.

This week's featured topic includes a collection of articles about the relevance of the mainframe today. Check them out and decide for yourself if the mainframe is going the way of the dinosaur. Then shoot me an e-mail with your opinions on the topic. We'll publish your comments in an upcoming Search390.com news article. You can always reach me by e-mailing [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Until next time...

Tip of the Week:
Mainframes are from Mars; workstations are from Venus
Mainframes are EBCDIC; Workstations are ASCII? Not so fast, code page breath! Linux/390 is pure ASCII. There is little, if anything, in mainframe hardware that can be described as EBCDIC-based. Want some more assumptions upended or just twisted? Then read this tip.
