NEW BOOK EXCERPT | Porting applications to Linux on the mainframe

Linux has come to the mainframe in a big way. IT managers like the
fact that the open source operating system provides Unix-level
reliability at a far cheaper price. But is it always a smart move to
port existing applications to Linux? This chapter from the brand new
book, "Linux on the Mainframe," published by Prentice Hall, covers
the financial and technical pros and cons of porting mainframe
applications to Linux. The authors explore the technical
considerations of porting, and they provide a general guide for
determining which applications are worth the cost and effort
associated with porting projects.

MEASURING CPU UTILIZATION OF INDIVIDUAL SUBROUTINES | Ask the Expert

Our transactions are broken up into 3-tier subroutines, presentation
logic, business logic and data management logic. All the programs are
written in COBOL II with DB2 and DPT (VSAM). My main question is, how
can we measure the CPU utilization of each individual subroutine
called during a task?

A BIT ABOUT WORKING STORAGE | Ask the Expert

I have a query on using the CEE modules. I allocate free memory in my
programs dynamically using CEEGTST and CEEFRST modules. Are there any
safety validations that can be included to prevent access of any
storage outside the program?

CICS TIP | Quick & Dirty Support for BIG (but not too big) COMMAREA

Some of you may have been fortunate enough to already know of
Search390 guru Robert Harris' elegant solution to the age-old 32K (or
less) COMMAREA size restriction. If you are, then you're one of the
folks s who insist on doing things the proper way, and are probably
implementing Bob's approach. But let's muse about, err, less elegant
but adequate solutions.

How about compression? The effectiveness of compression is dependent
on the method of compression chosen and the too-big COMMAREA
contents. Try it. COMMAREA-squishing can be quite addicting!

THE MISSING LINK | United hopes onboard e-mail plans will fly

Remember when the Airfone alone was a big deal? Well, now the
"friendly skies" soon will be the "e-mail friendly skies." United
Airlines is rushing to be the first carrier to offer onboard e-mail
on all its domestic flights. You'll be able to send as well as
receive messages and ping your peops via IM for $15.98. Hopefully,
the flight attendants won't ask for exact change. All you have to do
(besides pay) is plug your laptop into the jack on the Airfone
handset in front of you -- then you can enjoy the sensation of being
in a cubicle six miles off the ground. United hopes to get the
service off the ground by the end of the year. (The Associated Press)
