Welcome to another mind bending week at Search390.com. I'm your humble host, and this week I've teamed up with an old friend - the mysterious and elusive quizmaster known only as Mr. Know-IT-All - to offer something fun, exciting and educational for everyone.

No, we haven't launched a new reality-based Web site where lovesick strangers vie for each others' affections. It's even better than that. It's a chance to prove once and for all to co-workers, loved ones and to the rest of the world that you're a highly intelligent, unstoppable force in the field of mainframes and related technologies. That's right folks. It's time to take Mr. Know-IT-All's Mainframe Skills Challenge!

This grueling, 10-part quiz is designed to test your knowledge in several areas of mainframe administration and development. Topics covered include history of the mainframe, Linux on the mainframe, programming and much more. If you get a question right, move on to the next one. But if you get it wrong, be sure and look at the "Related Information" links so you can drive that newfound knowledge into your noggin once and for all.

At this point you might be wondering, "What do I win if I answer the questions correctly?" Well, it's nothing as frivolous as a material good. You'll get the satisfaction of knowing that you're a well rounded mainframer and you'll have earned the respect of your peers. Perhaps more importantly, you'll have earned the respect of Mr. Know-IT-All himself.

Okay, enough jibba jabba. CLICK HERE and let the games begin!

Until next time...

Tip of the Week:
Quick & Dirty Support for BIG (but not too big) COMMAREA
Some of you may have been fortunate enough to already know of Search390.com guru Robert Harris' elegant solution to the age-old 32K (or less) COMMAREA size restriction. If you are, then you're one of the folks who insist on doing things the proper way, and are probably implementing Bob's approach. But let's muse about, err, less elegant but adequate solutions. How about compression? The effectiveness of compression is dependent on the method of compression chosen and the too-big COMMAREA contents. Try it. COMMAREA-squishing can be quite addicting!
