 From the Editor:

by Mark Brunelli, Site Editor

Mainframers have a long and storied history. They tend to be fiercely loyal and many have been around for a number of decades. In some cases, the same can be said for the applications they run.

Do you have applications running on the mainframe that have been there since what seems like the beginning of time? How old are those apps, what do they do, and what makes you hold on to them?

I've heard stories about companies that have held on to applications that were implemented almost 20 years ago because the hardware they use isn't compatible with the newer software packages. Or companies are afraid that they'll lose data if they do upgrade or switch applications.

Then there are some who think, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Why mess with a good thing? Right?

What about your shop? Do you have any tales like that? What's the oldest application you have running? Send me your stories, and I'll post them on the site. Then we'll see who holds the title for the oldest running app. You can reach me anytime at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

See you online,
Mark Brunelli
