FEATURED TIP | Catching up with COBOL

Historically, things have moved rather slowly in the world of COBOL.
But over the last two years, IBM has picked up the pace by
introducing and then updating a new version of the programming
language - Enterprise COBOL for z/OS and OS/390 Version 3 - which
includes several new time saving features. Enter Tom Ross, an IBM
Software Engineer with more than 18 years of experience in COBOL
development. At last week's SHARE conference in Washington D.C., Ross
went before a group of COBOL developers with the goal of bringing
them up to date. In this excerpt from that very conference session,
Ross answers audience questions about COBOL's new capabilities in the
areas of multi-threading, XML and Unicode support.

IBM to extend DB2 Information Integrator's reach | eWEEK

IBM has launched work on a research and development project that
promises to extend the reach of its DB2 Information Integrator
software until it can dig out data from every corner of an
enterprise, whether inside or out of data warehouses.

WHITE PAPER | A smooth conversion from CA-7 to TWS for z/OS

This paper is based on the user experience of Claus Kaesler, an
independent IT consultant, based in Pinneberg, Germany. In 2003, a
migration from CA-7 to TWS for z/OS was carried out at a large German
insurance company (SIGNAL IDUNA). Claus used the excellent graphics
and lists provided by SmartIS to help him close information gaps and
ensure a high quality conversion - with a minimum of problems. The
paper shows only one example of how SmartIS can help with a major
project as well as routine, day-to-day information evaluation.

THE MISSING LINK | High-tech sunglasses tell if you're cool, hot

Ray-Ban meets the mood ring, with a little mercury thrown in for good
measure: A researcher at Yale University is working on sunglasses
that can read body temperature. The idea here is not for Wayfarer
wearers to show how cool (or hot) they are; rather, the shades are
geared toward athletes. If they get too far above 98.6 degrees, an
alarm goes off -- a reminder that it's time to gulp more H2O.
Wireless technology helps make it all happen. The Yalie says the same
technology can be used to help "read" a woman's fertility. (Reuters)
