FEATURED DEVELOPER TIP | Open Source: Open sores or open sesame?

It's not about General Public License (GPL) nor about pre-OCO (object
code only) days. They are not quite the same thing as public domain
or open source where volunteers merged their efforts and bestowed
their largess upon the general public.

This column concerns itself solely with the advisability of using
publicly available (public domain?) source code as a model or
actually incorporated into your in-house development projects.

Can source written by a rag-tag army of volunteers rise to the level
of quality one expects from an inhouse development staff? Often the
answer is a resounding YES!

See why. Read the entire tip at
http://www.search390.com/tip/1,289483,sid10_gci921922,00.html.

ASK THE EXPERT | Troubleshooting truncated data

QUESTION: A recently posed question asked about data being truncated
from Unix to mainframe on a VB file. We had the same problem but
specified the lrecl and recfm that corrected it. Now we have a
problem with the file when it gets to the mainframe. We are unable to
find the end of each record. It's like the file is one long stream.
Is there an argument to correct this problem?

IBM EXEC TOUTS NEED FOR BPEL SUPPORT, SOAS | CRN

An IBM exec says he sees a growing need for vendors to support BPEL
(Business Process Execution Language), an emerging specification that
would give programmers a way to formally describe processes
underlying business applications so that they can be exposed and
linked to processes in other applications.

The headline above and others are available on our news page.

THE MISSING LINK | Brosnan bonds with piercebrosnan.com

The title could have been Live and Let Cybersquat, but this was no
movie, and the man behind Bond was not about to let the man who owned
piercebrosnan.com get away with it. Jeff Burgar, who's kind of like
the Blofeld of cybersquatters, was redirecting piercebrosnan.com
traffic to a commercial Web site. The man of Remington Steele took
Burgar to the World Intellectual Property Organization, which ordered
the site go to Brosnan. So if Burgar loses his appeal, he could star
in a movie called The Spy Who Hates Me.
