From the Editor: Managing the environment

by Kate Evans-Correia, News Editor

We cover a lot of issues on Search390.com -- programming languages, development, outsourcing, consolidation, data management and storage. Something we don't generally cover, however, is the physical environment of the data center -- floor space, electricity, air conditioning, and security.

There's plenty of talk from vendors about which server and which software to use, but we're curious about the other aspects of your job. We hear very little about how you keep your data centers cool. How you keep your electric bill from skyrocketing. How much time you spend on the physical aspects of running your mainframes within the data center.

Maybe we're way off base here. Maybe it's the concern of your physical plant guys. Still, we're interested in learning how your business handles these sort of issues. If this is your responsibility, how much time would you say you spend managing the physical environment? E-mail me about how you handle this aspect of your job and hopefully we'll get a discussion going.
