Forty years ago this week, IBM unveiled the System 360 family of mainframes and revolutionized an industry.

IBM executives literally staked the future of the company on the System 360. At the time, Fortune magazine dubbed the system IBM's "$5 billion gamble" (such an investment would be roughly equivalent to $30 billion today.) It was second only to the Apollo moon mission as the most expensive project of the 1960s.

But the System 360's birth wasn't the only event in 1964 that helped shape the future.

    • The Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show.
    • Martin Luther King Jr. won the Noble Peace Prize.
    • Surgeon General Luther Terry delivered the first warning from the U.S. government that smoking may be hazardous to your health.
    • Plans to build the World Trade Center were announced.
    • Malcolm X, suspended from the Nation of Islam, says in New York City that he was forming a black nationalist party.
    • In New York Times Co. v. Sullivan 376 US254 1964, the Supreme Court of the United States rules that under the First Amendment, speech criticizing political figures cannot be censored.
    • The first Ford Mustang rolls off the assembly line at Ford Motor Company.
    • 5,000 more American military advisers are sent to South Vietnam bringing the total number of United States forces in Vietnam to 21,000.

Just as we're likely to take for granted the impact these events had on our lives, it's easy to underestimate the importance of the System 360. It changed computer technology forever.

In an industry in which a decade seems like an eon, the 40th birthday of the System 360 is quite unusual and something to celebrate. And as part of our tribute to the mainframe and its huge contribution to computing, we want to recognize all the mainframers out there by telling your stories.

Tell us where you were in 1964.

Personally, I have no memories of 1964 because I wasn't born until 1975. But what about you? The editors of Search390.com would love to know. We would love to include some of your stories in our coverage of the System 360 anniversary this month. Please send your comments to Edward Hurley.

Also, please take out poll on the 40th anniversary. Click here.
