  •  From the Editor: Reflecting on mainframe history

    by Edward Hurley, Editor

I have to admit I love birthday parties. I attended a doozy of one last week for the System 360.

The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. had an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the venerable system that laid down the architecture still used today. The fact that over 500 people came to celebrate the System 360's birthday is a testament to the technology.

Now, some people don't like celebrating their birthdays because it reminds them of their age. I, however, see birthdays as a great opportunity for reflection. I like to sit down and look back on what I have accomplished over the years.

So I think it's fitting to reflect a little on what the System 360 spawned. Below, I complied a list of interesting facts about the System 360.

    • The System 360 got its name from the 360 degrees of a compass because the system was to "encompass every need of every user." It certainly did. Early customers include Bank of America, Time Life and the NASA Institute of Space Study.
    • The first System 360s could process anything from 33,000 to 750,000 additions per second.
    • How does the System 360 compare with a new z990? The workload done by a System 360 run 24x7 for one week can be accomplished by a z990 in 11 seconds. Or let's say a System 360 has been running for the last 40 years. The computing racked up in those four decades can be done by a z990 in 6.23 hours!

    >> Running a JCL job

In our Developer forum, CAM394 asked:
I have created JCL to run a focus job in batch. I want to use a variable date in my focexec. The problem I have is that the date field that I want to use is YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.000000, and with JCL limiting me to 71 characters per row, I do not know how to rap the command to the next line (where the JCL is executing the focexec). Is there a simple command that I am missing that will continue the command?

Do you have an answer for CAM394? If so, please reply here.
