A few weeks ago, I asked you to tell me what you were doing when the System 360 was released in April of 1964. I couldn't imagine the flood of responses I would receive.
Many of you were in high school or college at the time. Few actually were working on mainframes but within a few years, many of you were working on System 360s. Kelly Arrey first used a System 360 while doing first year university programming assignments at McGill University in 1974.
There was David Tamez, who first worked with a System 360 in Vietnam while serving with the United States Army in 1971. "How would you like to be feeding IBM Hollerith cards with a live grenade next to you? Our orders were to destroy the hardware if we were overtaken," he said.
In the late '60s, Don Wallace started working for the state of South Dakota as a computer operations stores clerk. He soon was promoted to computer operator on an IBM S/360 Model 40 with DOS and continues to do mainframe work for the state. "Our position titles have changed like the CPU models over the years ... Oh, the many stories are exceeded only by the memories!," he said.
