Do you remember Transformers? They were toy robots that you could change into everything from a Volkswagen Beetle to a dump truck to a dinosaur.
Well, one day, when I was a kid, I saw a commercial for this all-in-one power tool system. It was a drill that converted to a table saw, a lathe and about 17 other things. It was like a Transformer for grown-ups.
It was probably the coolest thing I had seen in my short life!
So I ran to my father, an avid woodworker. "Daddy, daddy, I saw something you have to get! It's a power tool that is everything from a drill to a table saw to a router. It does everything!"
"But probably nothing well," he replied. My father explained that tools that did everything, usually did no one thing well. "You'd be better off buying the right tool for the job."
I took that lesson to heart. Throughout life I tried to favor the right tool rather than one that has a lot of uses. For example, it's much easier to remove a nut with the correct-sized socket wrench than with a pair of channel lock pliers.
Now, this is a lesson some technology companies haven't learned. They think they can be everything for everybody. For example, Microsoft is pushing Windows for everything from handhelds to data centers.
Now, Window dominates the desktop. It's like English in the business world. Windows' dominance means a lot of people know how to use it. Applications abound for the platform. So to use my father's words, Windows is the "right tool" for the desktop.
But is Windows the right tool for the data center?
Please check out this Face-Off article. I take the side of defending the venerable mainframe while Jim Connolly, executive editor of TechTarget (Search390.com's parent company), argues for Windows in the data center. Click here to read the article.

A Search390.com user asked:
Hi - I'm new around here and am just getting my feet wet with RACF etc. Was wondering if somebody could help me with a few questions ...
- If have a user recored stored in the RACF DBase can I construct an ldap query to perform a user bind based on the id and password stored in that record?
- If so, can I still do that same task if the idpassword are outside of the expiry password?
Ideally I would like to be able to bind a user via ldap so I can hand off changing the password to another application completely. But in order to do that I need the user bind to succeed even if outside the 30 day window. Thanks for any help.
