Well, Dave Nagy certainly learned from a mistake he made over 25 years ago. In this, the latest installment of Mainframe Mishaps, Nagy describe what happened when he made a change to both IPL volumes without testing. >> To see the story, click here: http://search390.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid10_gci1017756,00.html?track=NL-170&ad=495090 >> Do you have a funny or educational story about a mainframe mistake? While IPL'd on SYSRSA, I can apply maintenance to SYSRSB, test the maintenance in a test LPAR then IPL the production LPAR on SYSRSB. Then, maintenance can be applied to SYSRSA...continuing on with this logic...bouncing between SYSRSA and SYSRSB as production RESVOLs. How can I modify the SMP/E DDDEF statements that point to /usr..., /sample... and /bin... paths to point to the root system on the correct RES vol? For example, the MVST100 target zone DDDEFs should point to datasets on MVSRSA while the MVST200 target zone DDDEFs should point to datasets on MVSRSB. It is expected to save $800k per year in CPU costs. Are there any other COBOL quick hits like these out here? Generally, how does one find and recognize these? A 20-year-old college student in Oregon found that out first hand. It seems his cool, flat-screen Toshiba TV broadcast more than just "The Real World" episodes. His TV put out an international distress signal. How did he find out that his TV was like E.T.'s record player? When the police, civil air patrol, and search and rescue teams came to his apartment looking for someone in distress! Of course, being a college student, his only distress is choosing between Domino's and Pizza Hut. Toshiba offered to replace his mischievous TV, which was nice considering he was threatened with a $10,000 fine for broadcasting a false distress signal -- which would have been truly distressing.(Reuters) >> Click: http://edition.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/10/18/odd.television.reut/ >> Want to hear more offbeat tales from the world of information technology?
