I have to admit I like geeky tidbits of information. For example, did you know George Washington was Robert E. Lee's step grandfather-in-law?

Here is another neat bit of trivia: the surface area of a sphere with a volume of one liter is less than the surface areas of two half-liter spheres. In other words, if you were stuck on a desert isle and you had a 500-square-foot sheet of fabric, you would be better off making one large balloon rather than two smaller ones. The reason is you can make a larger single balloon.

I admit, that example is kind of wacky, but it does illustrate a point: sometimes bigger is better. Isn't the movement to replace mainframes with scores of Windows servers similar? It makes intuitive sense that managing, powering and even just housing one large server is more efficient.

Just a few years ago, consolidating smaller servers onto a mainframe was hyped. Now, moving away from mainframes to smaller servers is making headlines. Microsoft and other vendors have formed the Mainframe Migration Alliance, which provides information and products to companies that want to move away from the mainframe.

Which approach do you think will win out? Will data centers of the future feature hundreds of Windows or Linux boxes buzzing away? Or will mainframes and other large servers continue to dominate the data center? Click here to tell me your thoughts.

ITKNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

SNA to TN3270E Conversion

An ITKnowledge Exchange member asked:
We currently have centrally located IBM 390 mainframes connecting to iSeries machines in state field offices, which are using SNA -- SNUF devices. We are eliminating all SNA traffic, in favor of TN3270E connections. Has anyone converted an SNA/SNUF setup to an all-TN3270 setup on the iSeries (if possible)? Any leads would be appreciated.
