Is software pricing the next vendor battleground?
[by Kate Evans-Correia, News Director]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
As a reporter covering a conference, a lively lunchtime
conversation can be the highlight of your day - maybe the entire
event. During a conference in Las Vegas two weeks ago, I hit the jackpot - at the lunch table that is. I asked a simple question to the guy sitting to the left of me - "Is software pricing an issue within your organization?" While I could have guessed his answer, the response from the rest of the table took me by surprise. Of course, pricing an issue, but they were angry about it -- fed up and they weren't going take it anymore.
Gartner analysts warn that software pricing is indeed a "thorny
issue" particularly for ISVs. Change is absolutely necessary -- but how? That was the big question. And while some vendors are responding by "digging in their heels" some major vendors are rethinking their pricing. IBM, Microsoft, Sun, for starters, are offering more flexible plans. But, it's hardly enough. Today, IT managers have the leverage to demand more and vendors know it. As a result, I believe pricing will be the next big differentiator among vendors.
Do you agree? Are you fed up with the way software is priced? Are you paying more than you believe you should? Does the complexity of pricing plans drive you crazy? To you believe vendors are starting to make good faith efforts to change? Let me know what you think. Send your comments to me, Kate Evans-Correia here and then take our poll here.

SNA to TN3270E conversion
An ITKnowlege Exchange member asked:
We currently have centrally located IBM 390 mainframes connecting to
iSeries machines in state field offices, which are using SNA -- SNUF
devices. We are eliminating all SNA traffic in favor of TN3270E
connections. Has anyone converted an SNA/SNUF setup to an all-TN3270
setup on the iSeries (is this even possible)? Any leads would be
appreciated. Register your areas of expertise on ITKnowledge Exchange and play the expert.

ADVICE:
Using REXX EXEC to enforce JCL standards
A Search390.com user asked Mark Zelden, our z/OS system programming expert:
"I'm the product admin for CA-JCLCheck at my company. I'm also new to the product and would like to use the REXX EXEC that comes with the product, as well as make some changes to enforce our JCL standards. I would like to know if you know of anyone who is using the REXX EXEC to enforce their JCL standards. If it's possible, can you make it available so that I along with others don't have to "re-invent the wheel"? Thank you.
