You know the words. Those little bits of IT lingo that have their own special meaning when you are talking about bits and bytes.

I am thinking about words such as "solution" and "enterprise." For example, marketers want people to think the product they are hawking will solve problems so they call it a solution. Enterprise is used in a similar way. When a vendor wants to denote that a product is meant for large, complex corporations they call it the "enterprise" edition. Just think for a moment about all the products with enterprise in the title ...

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines enterprise as "a unit of economic organization or activity; especially a business organization." There is no mention of it meaning a very large business like an insurance company or bank. Yet when one mentions enterprise, we know what they mean.

The reason I bring this up is sometimes we take such terms for granted. I can honestly say it took me a little while to pick up on what enterprise meant. To my credit, I did realize people weren't making a reference to a Star Trek rerun.

I bring this up because this week's Featured Topic is on Enterprise COBOL. To take a look at it, click here.

ITKNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

SNA to TN3270E conversion

An ITKnowlege Exchange member asked: We currently have centrally located IBM 390 mainframes connecting to iSeries machines in state field offices, which are using SNA -- SNUF devices. We are eliminating all SNA traffic in favor of TN3270E connections. Has anyone converted an SNA/SNUF setup to an all-TN3270 setup on the iSeries (is this even possible)? Any leads would be appreciated. Register your areas of expertise on ITKnowledge Exchange and play the expert.

FEATURED EXPERT: Linux on the mainframe
[David Boyes, president, Sine Nomine Associates]

Anyone who works with Linux on IBM's S/390 mainframes has certainly heard of David Boyes. He made history early in the project by running no less than 41,400 Linux images on a single mainframe, all of them doing real work under simulated load as Web servers. More recently, David has been involved in helping application service providers and other companies deploy Linux on S/390 hardware. Dr. David Boyes is CTO and President of Sine Nomine Associates, (Latin for "without name"), which he runs with his wife Margarete, and has participated in operating systems and networking research for more than 20 years, working on design and deployment of systems and voice/data networks worldwide. David has designed scenarios and economic models for systems deployment on many platforms, and is currently involved in design and worldwide deployment of scalable system infrastructure for several Global 1000 companies. NEWS: Will Windows and Unix slay Big Iron?
Just a few years ago, consolidating smaller servers onto a mainframe was hyped. Now, moving away from mainframes to smaller servers is making headlines. Recently, Search390.com users weighed in on this debate.

ADVICE: How can I access SAR tapes using FTP?
A Search390.com user asked Gerhard Adam, our systems management expert:
We are using SAR for archiving the job output. As soon as the job completes the execution, it will be kept in tapes with the help of SAR. How can I access that using FTP?

ADVICE: How can I use a PDS-member DSN in MVS?
A Search390.com user asked Gerhard Adam, our systems management expert:
In MVS, how can I use an output DSN that I have dynamically created in an earlier job step and stored in a PDS member?

ADVICE: With AD and without RACF, will our approach compromise security?
A Search390.com user asked Gerhard Adam, our systems management expert:
We are thinking of front-ending a mainframe application with a server-based application. This application will use Active Directory to validate a user and then access the mainframe on behalf of the user. User IDs will not be passed through to RACF. Does this approach compromise security? If so, is there a better way to do it?
