FROM THE EDITOR

Has your mainframe ever murdered anyone?

Have you noticed the subtle smear campaign that has been going on for the last few years? A tried and true term is linked to negative connotations.

I am talking about "mainframe" of course. To people in the zSeries world, the word conjures up words like stable, reliable and secure. But to ignorant people, mainframe means just a big, old computer.

The latest example of this can be found in a recent science fiction movie. I won't tell you which flick as I am about to give away the ending. A mainframe turned out to be the murderer. That's just simply goes over the line.

Why wasn't it just simply a "computer" that did the killing? Why did they have to call it specifically a mainframe?

Perhaps mainframe has become too charged a term. Maybe, mainframe users should come up with a new term for the platform. A few years ago, IBM tried to reposition S/390 machines as "enterprise servers" but it never really caught on.

Let me know what you think. Do you think mainframes need a new name? If so, what would you suggest calling them? Click here to send your thoughts.

NEWS: Sun's new pricing model: More bang for a buck?
Sun's latest pricing model is clever, but after all the numbers are worked out, can it stack up against other utility-based offerings from rivals IBM, Oracle and HP? Are data center managers ready for this new way of calculating the cost of computing power?

ADVICE: COBOL 85 vs. VS COBOL II
A Search390.com user asked Tom Ross, our application development expert:
What is difference between COBOL 85 and VS COBOL II? Shall I use VS COBOL II for microcomputer applications?

ADVICE: Is moving a seven-digit receiver to a six-digit one OK?
A Search390.com user asked Tom Ross, our application development expert:
I would like to know if there will be any problems if we move from 9(7)comp-3 to 9(6) comp-3. The storage for both is going to be 4 bytes.
