LEAD STORY
"V5R1 delivers for developers"
IBM's announcement this week of V5R1 reaffirms its
commitment to iSeries developers across the spectrum of
development options from RPG to XML. By making WebSphere
Development Studio (WDS) a free upgrade from existing
AS/400 application development tools, IBM is encouraging
developers to take advantage of both transition tools like
WebFacing and new development environments like Java and
XML.

[1] "Chicago to IBM: Clean up your act"
Maybe IBM needed more than a reprimand from San Francisco
city officials. It appears that IBM's rebel advertising
agency is at it again--this time in Chicago. The troupe may
have to pay thousands of dollars in fines and restitution
for graffiti spray-painted on Chicago sidewalks in a
multimillion-dollar Big Blue ad campaign touting the
company's new eServer systems.

[2] "Server, heal thyself"
IBM says it's developing a supercomputer that will have the
ability to fix its own problems. Dubbed eLiza, the multi-
billion project is an attempt to mimic the self-healing
abilities of living creatures. The initiative isn't the
first from IBM to develop systems that can self-monitor.
Big Blue has already begun selling memory systems that can
keep working even when memory chips fail completely.

"Ogle not Google's top scientist"
What's it like to be a woman working in the Silicon Valley?
Very frustrating at times for Monika Henzinger, the
director of research at the Internet search engine Google.
She is asked this question more often than she would like,
especially this week when her name appeared on San Francisco Women
on the Web's list of the top 25 women on the Web. Her answer,
"It feels normal." Maybe the current Miss France should have a
talk with Henzinger. People seem to be asking a similar
question about her.
