[1] "Linux on iSeries: 3 out of 4 distributors ain't bad"
IBM made good and built a nest for the penguin in new
iSeries servers running OS/400 V5R1. Now the big question
is, will the major Linux distributors create special
versions of their products for the iSeries and offer the
enterprise-class support for the machines?

[2] "IBM to kill model 170, 7XX gear later this year"
IBM will soon discontinue support for Apache and Northstar
generations of AS/400 products. If you're just not ready to
give them up, however, some distributors selling second-
hand systems may have them.

We have been told that V4R5 would be the last version of
OS/400 to support the OfficeVision office-automation suite.
Even though OfficeVision/400 is not officially supported on
V5R1, this writer has learned from IBM sources, as well as
his own experience, that it will run on V5R1 with some
limitations. Keep in mind IBM won't provide technical
support or documentation for the program.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Global sites left out of Webby nods"
The Webby Awards are the Internet's answer to the Oscars.
This year's nominations give a nod to music, spiritualism
and the downright odd. But they are neither particularly
worldly, nor especially wide. The 350-member International
Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences has put an overwhelming
focus on English-language, U.S.-centered sites. Still, the
gala July awards ceremony is expected to draw more than
3,000 technology industry figures wearing some of the same
outrageous fashions as their film industry counterparts.
The best news award-winners must work within a five-words-
or-less acceptance speech limit.
