[1] "IBM VP touts Linux for diverse infrastructures
Irving Wladawsky-Berger, vice president of technology and
strategy for IBM, told a group attending the Merrill Lynch
Hardware Technology Conference in New York last week that
Linux would help them address a number of their corporate
infrastructure issues. The integration of legacy systems is
so important and Linux can help address the need for better
integration and flexibility, he said.

[2] "UniComp, California Software partner to settle lawsuits"
California Software and UniComp, staunch rivals in the
System/36 and AS/400 RPG application rehosting business,
announced that they have settled all pending litigation
between their two companies by forging a new partnership. The
litigation, which was ongoing as e-business middleware vendor
ROI bought UniComp a few weeks ago, was settled just as ROI
had hoped it would be, before the UniComp acquisition closed.

[3] "CA blames typographical problem for earnings error"
Computer Associates blamed an overstatement in its fiscal
2001 profit last month on a typographical error. The
explanation, made in two press statements and a U.S.
Securities and Exchange Commission filing, follows media
claims that the mainframe software company had overstated
sales and profits for years so that new products appeared to
have sold more quickly.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
---------------------------------------------

"Program catches copycat students"
After grading reams of term papers, most teachers must feel
like they've heard it all before. One University of Virginia
professor actually had, and decided to act on rumors about
his students filing plagiarized papers. Louis Bloomfield
wrote a software program that scans electronically filed
papers for strings of words previously submitted in his
classes. Surprise! He caught 122 less-than-original authors.
The suspects were called before the university's Honor
Committee, where they were presumably more innovative in
their defense.
