LEAD STORY
"IBM makes a splash with fibre channel for Shark"
The availability of Shark storage on IBM's iSeries server
is nothing new, but the hook for users with the recent
release of the V5R1 operating system is the server's
ability to connect to Shark via fibre channel, which brings
with it a number of productivity and operational benefits.
The rub, however, is that using a fibre channel connection
doesn't necessarily increase performance, since the speed
of the network depends on the disk itself -- and the
company's ability to move data on and off the disk
efficiently.

[1] "V5R1 brings good news and bad"
V5R1 has a slew of hot new functions, but one analyst
predicts that while the enhancements are a boon to the
system, they'll shrink the iSeries' install base and sales
in the long run.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
---------------------------------------------

"Hormel is resigned to use of 'spam' in Net slang"
Sure, it's side-splittingly funny when a bunch of Vikings
sing a chorus of "Spam, spam, spam, spam..." but who can
blame the folks at Hormel for getting a little edgy every
time the name of their most famous brand of "meat" product
is used to denote something most email users despise?
Still, Hormel has decided not to buck popular culture and
says it will no longer fight as aggressively to stamp out
the derogatory use of the term spam. They only ask that
when using the word to describe their luncheon meat, the
word be capitalized so that the terms can be more easily
distinguished. Perhaps a better differentiator is this: One
you eat. The other you delete.
