LEAD STORY
"OS/400 V5R1: Do your homework or seek professional help"
There's a lot of talk about the bugs in V5R1, but some
suspect that it's the users who are simply bugged by the
changes. Perhaps, then, users should make the move to V5R1
only if they have a pressing business requirement -- let
the power users work out the glitches. But, just because
you're not the first to implement the new operating system,
doesn't mean you can't be one of the first to learn it.
It'll limit the frustration.

[1] "Salomon Smith Barney sizes up server market"
Of $1.5 billion in Linux-related hardware revenue last
year, all but $300 million came from PC servers, according
to analyst firm Salomon Smith Barney. So, despite IBM's
push in the midrange market, NT will continue to dominate
the platform for the open-source operating system.

Sun and IBM are both pushing 64-bit versions of Java
technology at the JavaOne event in San Francisco this week,
and both companies plan to support Java on Intel's new
Itanium 64-bit chips in the future. More important for
programmers, however, is that the companies' announcements
indicate that Java is now an option for programmers working
on data-intensive software applications, including
scientific computational and large analytical databases.
